A 28-year-old Indian man was shot dead in North Philadelphia shortly after delivering pizza boxes to a housing complex.
The victim has been identified as Anshul Kuncha. The shooting took place after 12.30 am on Friday at the Raymond Rosen Homes housing complex on Edgeley Street in North Philadelphia.
According to police, Kuncha was shot in the head after completing the delivery. The address where the delivery was made was later found to be a vacant unit.
Police said they have recovered the phone number from which the pizza order was placed and are investigating it as a key lead.
“He was lying on the ground unresponsive, bleeding heavily with a gunshot wound to his head,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department.
Kuncha was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said they were able to identify the pizza shop by looking at the pizza boxes found at the scene. It was later confirmed that Kuncha worked for Pete’s Pizza.
Investigators recovered three spent shell casings just inches away from where the victim was found.
“That is an indication that the shooter or shooters were standing very, very close to the victim,” Small said.
Kuncha’s vehicle was also found near the scene, with a pizza warmer still inside.
Inside the vacant apartment, officers found three pizza boxes and a bag, which appeared to be untouched. Investigators believe the victim had successfully delivered the items before being shot outside.
Police said surveillance cameras operated by the Philadelphia Housing Authority captured portions of the incident, though the actual shooting was not caught on camera.
According to investigators, the footage showed the delivery driver being followed by two people wearing dark clothing. One of them appeared to be carrying a dark backpack.
No arrests have been made so far, but police said they have a lead.
“We do have the phone number that made that pizza delivery,” Small said.
