After claiming that he would be the first CM of Andhra Pradesh, YS Jagan became the first opposition leader in the 13-district state.
However, despite talking of taking on the government, Jagan hasn’t done much and achieved little as the leader of opposition. But he did show some expertise in deftly handling the TDP leaders who tried their best to instigate Jagan who was sitting in the Assembly for the first time.
On the other hand, he hasn’t been able to mobilize and infuse confidence into his party cadre after their poll defeat.
In fact, during the recent Assembly sessions, Jagan did not allow any of his party members to take part in the conversations and tried to steal all limelight.
Meanwhile, the party which had in the past encouraged defections from other parties started crying foul when their MPs started defecting into TDP. While one MP already jumped into TDP, another MP stayed put in the last minute.
There have been questions about his dictatorial rule within the party and this has become a topic of discussion among his party workers. But they did feel relieved and rejuvenated by the way Jagan could defend himself vis-à-vis a seasoned politician like Chandra Babu Naidu.
Jagan is also facing problems trying to address various issues in both the states. For example, in the case of Polavaram, Jagan could not get his Telangana members and Andhra members to arrive at a common consensus.
Much is being expected from Jagan as the opposition party’s failure will instill confidence in the ruling party to go about its agenda without fear or censure. Instead of complaining about defections, it would be better if Jagan worked towards building his party base and working on projects concerning public problems. Till now, YSRCP hasn’t succeeded in coming up with a strong strategy to tackle TDP.
For now, YSRCP hasn’t scored any marks. Only by working for people and mobilizing cadre will the party be able to get any marks.
